A Redland drug addict caught with an illegal drug and pipe stashed in his undies was served up as a cautionary tale to a class of high school students visiting Cleveland Magistrates Court for their legal studies course.

Matthew James Green pleaded guilty in the court on September 5 to possessing utensils or pipes that had been used, possessing dangerous drugs and the possession of a knife in a public place.

The court heard he was spotted by police entering and leaving a known Redland drug address on April 10.

Police prosecutor Lisa Pye said Green was known to police who found a glass pipe and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) hidden in his underwear during a search.

“Police also found a folding knife in his back pocket that he claimed to use for carving wood at his home,” Sergeant Pye said.

“He admitted to using to pipe earlier that day.

“The defendant has a six-page criminal history,” she said.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta asked Green to address a group of high school students sitting in the courtroom who were there for a legal studies course excursion.

“All of these students have the potential to get into drugs, particularly at this age,” Ms Vasta said.

“It’s easy for me to sit here and tell them not to get involved with drugs, so Mr Green please tell them something you wish you had known at their age.

“Do me a favour and tell them how drugs have impacted your life.’’

Green, who represented himself, obliged and told the students using drugs was not worth it.

“Whether the reason is to spare your money or your health, don’t do it,” Green said.

Ms Vasta said if the students never started on drugs they would never end up in Green’s predicament.

He was sentenced to 40 hours of community service, to be performed over 12 months.

Convictions were recorded.
