A 20-year-old Capalaba man has been given a second chance after cutting off his ankle monitor, with a magistrate handing down a community service order instead of a jail sentence.

Jakob Porima, who appeared in Cleveland Magistrates Court on Tuesday via video link from jail, pleaded guilty to one charge of wilful damage.

The court heard Porima, who was last year jailed for two years for break and enter offences and was on parole at the time, was caught without his ankle monitor on April 7 this year.

It is understood that he removed or cut off the device himself.

Porima’s lawyer said her client had a very difficult upbringing and was currently suffering from anxiety and depression.

The court also heard that, before his arrest, Porima had sought help for his ongoing drug addiction.

After hearing how Porima wanted to get help, Magistrate Deborah Vasta said: “Look, you’re only 20 and what I really admire about you is that you … were wanting that help.

“My hope for you is that you do get out and you do start to change the way you think and carve yourself a new future and you eventually get a job.

“My aim is to give you some inspiration.”

Ms Vasta handed Porima a community service order of 60 hours, which he will be required to fulfil once released on parole. A parole date has not yet been set.

Porima was also ordered to pay $858 in restitution.
