Nicole Marie Petersen was sentenced to a $300 good behaviour bond over 12 months which would include a drug counselling session when she appeared at the Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday. No conviction was recorded.
The court heard Victoria Point woman Petersen was intercepted on Sycamore Drive at 6.40pm on March 31 when a saliva test showed positive for the drug.
Aside from having a “fairly unimpressive traffic history” Petersen, who was unrepresented and made no comment, had no like history.
Magistrate Deborah Vasta said counselling would be more effective than a simple fine.
“It is a very slippery slope this drug; it is a nasty drug and it comes with nasty people,” Magistrate Vasta said.
“I really am hoping to give you the tools, through counselling, to stop you from losing a lot of money, family relationships and your driver’s licence.”
A running montage of before and after images of methamphetamine users was played on monitors during the hearing showing the drug’s deleterious effects.
“It is a horrible, horrible drug,” the magistrate said.
“I have never met one person who has not regretted using it so let’s help stop it now before I see you again and again and the thousands of dollars that you will lose and the convictions (that you may get).”
