Hundreds share memories of old Alex Hills corner shop

News that a popular corner shop in Brisbane’s Bayside closed last week sent old customers on a trip down memory lane with one even suggesting they would start a fundraiser to get the store back up and running.

NEWS that a popular corner shop in Brisbane’s Bayside closed last week sent old customers on a trip down memory lane.

Hundreds shared their memories of the Red Shop, with sad face emojis aplenty, at the loss of the store that served customers on Finucane Rd for more than 40 years.

Previous owner Vin Du and Qi Li even said they felt they had “let everybody down” for selling the business back in 2017.

“I feel that I have the responsibility for it. Sorry to let everybody down. I wish we hadn’t sold it,” Ms Du wrote on Facebook.

“It was definitely one of the hardest decision that we have ever made.”

The couple took over the store in 2011 and despite being robbed four times, had many great memories with customers over the six years.

“They always looked after us,” Ms Du said.

“When one of the robberies happened we had one customer who we had never seen come in and hand us $50 cash.”

Others had equally fond memories of the old corner store.

“End of an era,” Nicholas Loh wrote.

“I used to live 6 houses up from the shop and remember every Sunday growing up running down the get the Sunday Mail and milk.”

Mel Walker said she bought her first “Spice Girls lollipop” at the store.

“This is where we used to stop on the way home from school to get our 50c bag of mixed lollies,” Katrina Moore wrote.

One Facebook user even suggested the community start an online fundraiser to get the business back up and running.

“Jessie Peden soooooo sad. Let’s start a go fund me to get the red shop back up and running hehe,” Tilika-Lou Peden wrote.
