Get ready for a fiesta of food freebies. One of the world’s fastest-growing fast food companies will open one of the biggest Mexican drive-through restaurants in the southern hemisphere southeast of Brisbane this week.

Fast food chain Guzman y Gomez will open its third restaurant in Redlands on Wednesday, complete with an internal drive-through that runs through the building.

The innovative designs followed months of planning at the site, one of Redland city’s busiest and most dangerous intersections at Ormiston, on the busy Shore St West and Wellington St roundabout.

Leading the team at GYG Cleveland is Zach Mehew, previously a restaurant manager at GYG North Ipswich.

“I’m so proud GYG has given me the opportunity to open a new restaurant,” he said.

“We’re excited to show Cleveland locals our fresh, fast and clean food.

“Since I started at GYG, I’ve been given the resources and tools I need to run a successful restaurant and I have all the confidence that GYG Cleveland will be a huge success.

“We’ve hired many locals already and are always looking for new team members.”

The restaurant and drive-through is on the former IGA site, which is within walking distance to the local train station, Cleveland State High School and other fast-food retailers.

IGA moved to the other end of the popular shopping complex, taking the place of the former Harvey Norman, in 2021 which allowed the transformation.

Since 2016, politicians have promised to get lights installed at the roundabout.

Mr Mehew said he expected the opening to be busy with the restaurant chain advertising $5 burritos and bowls and free coffee all day.

GYG Cleveland will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner daily from 7am to 11pm.

Those who can’t make the opening on Wednesday, June 28, can score a free burrito by signing up as a new "Gomex" user on GYG’s new app.
