A 22-year-old Alexandra Hills man has been charged with “deliberately” setting fire to a major Cleveland road on Sunday evening which led to a fire ripping through a local cemetery towards a major hospital.
Emergency services were called to Wellington Road at 7.30pm after vegetation and shrubs were reported to be on fire.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman said witnesses described a man who had been in the area as the fire started.
Glen Christopher Olive is charged with one count of setting fire to vegetation, wilful damage, possession of a dangerous drug (cannabis) and obstruct police.
“The fire went all the way from the Cleveland cemetery up to the Redland Hospital,” a police spokeswoman said.
Queensland Ambulance Services said the fire was “large”.
“Two crews attended the scene just after 9pm and left just before 10pm,” a Queensland Ambulance spokesman said.
Police media said it is alleged the man was in possession of a number of lighters.
