From the “beginner’s guide to starting a vegetable patch” and the “joys of composting” to “good and bad bugs in your garden” and “preserving a bumper harvest”, there’s something for everyone.

ROGI’s Jill Nixon said the evening was a wonderful opportunity for new gardeners and seasoned green thumps to come along and share in the “great support network”.

She said the group was delighted to provide new members with a “buddy who will be able to point them to the various people who can help”.

“You’ll learn lots and get hooked.”

With her own “work in progress” in Birkdale, Ms Nixon said her gardening adventure was built on the back of “many borrowed books from the ROGI library”.

“And visiting other members’ gardens is valuable for inspiration and local knowledge,” she said.

“I get asked lots of gardening questions. The footpath to the train station carries many pedestrians who often stop and chat, and sometimes come in for a walk around and bring back children to visit the chooks.

“Many comment on the positive aspects of growing food in the front yard.”

She said her best tip for new gardeners would be “don’t be disheartened if something doesn’t work, just try something else”.

“Adjust your vision to the amount of time and effort you are willing to put in,” she said.
