Fire has damaged one of the southeast’s most iconic vacant buildings on the Pacific Motorway, half way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast this morning.

Four fire crews attended the former Antiques and Collectables Market at Loganholme, after smoke was seen coming from the second storey of the building, left vacant for more than 14 years.

The building was bought by Logan City Council after its days as a popular antiques and collectable store came to an end.

The site feel into rack and ruin after state plans to build the Coomera Connector were unveiled revealing the site was needed for the new road.

A QFES spokesman said the fire was small but there was a lot of smoke billowing across the nearby Pacific Motorway.

“People heading south in the early morning peak will have seen the smoke coming from the second level – but nobody has been injured.”

The two-storey former Antiques Market, on the M1, closed its doors for the final time in 2008.

Since then, a number of businesses have made offers to turn the site into a tourist attraction including a haunted house dining experience.

Plans to use the site as a housing expo also failed followed by a court dispute when plans to make it the new home to Alma Park Zoo also fell through.

Alma Park Zoo was going to move in but that was eight years ago. Now ratepayers are angry they are forking out millions to pay for around-the-clock security on this iconic vacant building on the M1.
