Teacher Skye Strand stepped up to be the DJ for the night and kept the 100 students on their toes while dance teacher and choreographer Ainslie Murray manned the photo booth and Year 12 Assistant Dean Victoria Sadleir ensured everyone got plenty to eat.

Like in the 1984 movie Flashdance, when a whole town is forbidden from dancing, students and staff at the school thought the 2020 seniors would see out the year with a sit-down dinner at tables.

But that all changed when Ms Murray heard the ban would be lifted.

“It was the best news we could have,” she said.

“It’s been a hard year with many events cancelled including our annual Showcase performance which we spend a lot of time choreographing.

“A year without dancing is a long time.”

The event was in question in July when the ban was put in place and after the first round of tough COVID-19 restrictions forced many students to homeschool.

Health Minister Steven Miles said no decision had been made on further easings despite no new cases overnight there were still four active cases.

He said an investigation was underway into traces of the virus in sewage samples taken from Wynnum, Sandgate and Maroochydore treatment plants this week.

There were 4722 tests conducted in the 24 hours to Saturday morning.
