Court hears how meth transformed Redland Bay woman Jordyn Ashleigh Witt’s life

Four years ago this Bayside woman had a promising career - until she turned to evading police in stolen cars and spending time in jail - all due to a meth addiction, a court has heard.

The surprising history of meth

A 23-year-old woman whose life spiralled into a cycle of meth-fuelled crime, including driving in stolen cars and riding stolen motorcycles, has been warned by a magistrate to ditch the dodgy mates who keep her hooked to meth.

Appearing via video link from remand at Cleveland Magistrates Court (September 23), Redland Bay woman Jordyn Ashleigh Witt pleaded guilty to more than 20 charges.

They included two counts of unlawfully using a vehicle; evading police; entering a premises and committing an indictable offence and seven counts of fraud.

The court heard Witt was a Year 12 graduate with years of trade qualifications, whose life devolved into criminality through an addiction to ice and friendships with some of the region’s more serious criminals.

The nefarious combination, according to police, saw her partake in serial drug-fuelled offending between February and June.

She used a stolen credit card on seven occasions in under three hours on February 23 to purchase miscellaneous items including tobacco.

On March 10 she rode a stolen motorcycle while SPER suspended and on March 28 she used boltcutters to enter a premises to steal.

On April 1 she again drove while suspended and on that occasion she had meth in her system.

The wanton offending came to a climax, the court heard, on June 24.

Witt sped away from police on that day after she was clocked doing 114km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Ipswich motorway while driving a stolen vehicle with fake number plates.

She was ultimately arrested on June 30 and had spent the last 86 days on pre-sentence remand.

Defence solicitor Brittany White said her client had strong prospects before she became addicted to meth in 2017.

The court heard Witt had graduated Year 12, had worked at a chemist and had spent years working in fencing with family.

Her life finally spiralled out of control after she moved out of her parents home, with bouts of homelessness and drug taking devolving to criminal activity.

Now sober after her first spell in prison, the defendant enjoyed “very strong” family support and planned on pursuing drug rehabilitation, according to the defence.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta said Witt’s drug abuse was such that prison had been the only option and warned her to avoid her previous company going forward.

“They are leeches just sucking all the good things out of your life,” Ms Vasta said.

“It really makes me shudder to think of the sort of people you hang out with, riding stolen motorbikes and stolen cars.

“You are fairly close to those people who are higher up the food chain who are involved in some pretty serious activities.”

Witt was sentenced to six months’ prison with immediate parole.

She was further sentenced to two years’ probation; ordered to pay $237.76 in restitution and fined $600.

For her traffic offences, Witt was disqualified from driving for two years and nine months.
