The wanton destruction of a bird nest and its chicks at a southeast Queensland shopping centre has a gotten a big reaction from a councillor disgusted by the alleged animal cruelty.

A horrified councillor is determined to find the persons or person who allegedly pulled down a swallow’s nest and killed its resident chicks at a popular southeast Queensland shopping centre car park.

Redland City Council Division 9 councillor Adelia Berridge was shocked to find a nest she had been observing at Horizons @ Wellington Point destroyed with its dead chicks scattered on the ground at around 8.45am this morning.

Cr Berridge said the distressed parents were swooping the area and were in danger of being hit by passing cars.

The councillor said she appreciates some shoppers may find the birds cumbersome for their waste but was adamant this particular nest was built away from vehicles at a protected spot, making the destruction seemingly all the more cruel.

“This was very vicious, there was no reason to do it in the manner it has been done,” Cr Berridge said.

“There is no justification for pulling it apart – what does that say about the people who live among us?

“What did they get out of doing this? I would like to face them and ask them that.”

It is understood the family of birds had taken up residence at the spot some two weeks ago.

Native wildlife is protected under Queensland law and the councillor assured she would be reporting the matter to police and inquiring after CCTV footage of the area.

A spokesman for The Redlands Wildlife Rescue confirmed the incident is being investigated.
