A suspicious bulge in the pants of a carpenter who was out cycling at 1.45am was a giveaway to police, who found three grams of meth worth $1,500, a court has heard.

Appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Birkdale man Alex James Kok, 27, was warned his sentence would likely have been more severe if he was not so proactive in arranging for rehabilitation services.

Supported by his mother at court, Kok pleaded guilty to four charges which included possessing dangerous drugs schedule 2 drug quantity of or exceeding schedule 3; possessing dangerous drugs and unlawful possession of restricted drugs.

The court heard Kok was observed by police taking his hand off his handlebars to place something down his pants while cycling at 1.45am on Saturday, May 22 in Thorneside.

A bulge in his pants gave the man away, according to police.

“You could actually see the bulge from the left side of his shorts from where he was concealing it,” a police prosecutor said.

“There was a black sunglasses case in his underwear.”

A search of the case revealed a clip-seal bag with crystal substance, another clip-seal bag containing one Seroquel (Quetiapine) tablet, 0.6 grams of cannabis, a straw and sponge.

The court heard Kok told police he had been visiting a friend and admitted to having paid $1,500 for what he thought was three grams of meth.

A police test would confirm there was 2.95 grams of the drug.

A full-time carpenter earning $2000 a week, Kok also pleaded guilty to contravening a direction or requirement of police when he failed to report to a police station within seven days of the incident.

The prosecution noted it was not the defendant’s first dalliance with drug offending, with his history dating to 2013.

Defence solicitor Tania Lacy said her client was single, a father to an 18-month-old and “very remorseful”.

Having not touched ice since the incident, Kok had been proactive in seeking treatment through a psychologist, according to Ms Lacy.

Negative drug tests for opiates and meth were offered to the court by the defence.

Kok was sentenced to 12 months’ probation with no conviction recorded.

Acting Magistrate Ann Gummow noted had the defendant not taken his treatment so seriously, his sentence would likely have been more severe.

“I commend you on the initiative you have taken because otherwise you would probably not be getting this sentence,” she said.
