Beach erosion, new kitchen cramp island camping

Campers heading to North Stradbroke Island for Easter have been told they will be able to pitch tents, but key locations will remain out of bounds.

North Stradbroke Island seesaw over tent ban

Straddie campers will be able to pitch tents over Easter but not on the waterfront.

Tent sites along the beach at Adder Rock and Home Beach have been closed for the festive season.

Construction of an amenities block at the small Home Beach site required the closure of a large part of the campgrounds.

Heavy rains this month washed away much of the waterfront beach sites at Adder Rock, forcing management to shut some waterfront tent sites.

However, Minjerribah Camping said there were still tent sites available on the island over the Easter long weekend – just not on the waterfront.

Bookings for the January school holidays opened this month and all van sites at Amity were booked out in the first two days as were all tent sites at Cylinder.

It is still unknown how many waterfront tent sites will be opened at Home Beach over the January holidays.

“Home Beach is a very small campground and it is hard to estimate how many tent sites will be available there after the construction of a new kitchen and amenities block,” a spokeswoman from Minjerribah Camping said.

“We understand that regular campers want their usual sites but there have been so many changes in the past year due to COVID and upgrades that it is impossible, at this stage, to determine how many sites will be available and where they will be.

“At Adder Rock, the waterfront sites have been affected by erosion and we cannot allow people to camp there because it has been deemed unsafe and is cordoned off.”

Camper Grant Anderson said he was disappointed that his family would not be able to get their regular tent site at Home Beach for January.

“It looks like they are not opening up bookings on any waterfront tent sites at Adder Rock or Home Beach,” he said.

“I rang them and they told me they will not be opening up soon and that there is work being done on the Home Beach waterfront sites. I can only assume eco tents.

“So them doing a backflip on tent camping is not all true.”

But Minjerribah Camping said there were no plans to replace tent sites with eco tents at Adder or Home Beach.

A spokeswoman said there had been “lots of rumours” about which sites would reopen but confirmed that eco tents were already at Bradbury’s Beach, Cylinders and Adder Rock.

However, she said the grounds at Bradbury’s Beach and Adams Beach, the two Dunwich campsites, would remain closed to the public indefinitely.
