Alexandra Hills man tells court he catches more fish when he is high on ice

Some anglers use special bait. Others have a secret spot. Find out why this Alexandra Hills man’s technique didn’t wash.

MOST dedicated anglers have a few tricks up their sleeve to land a big one.

Some have a secret spot, the location of which they guard with their life.

Others have a special bait which is not sold in tackle shops.

For Alexandra Hills resident John Thomas Cantrill, 37, he smokes meth to give him the edge over the creatures of the deep.

Cantrill appeared in Cleveland Magistrates Court today on a single charge of possessing drugs after police found $50 worth of ice on him when they searched him on the corner of Jasmine and Maranta streets on January 3 this year.

Cantrill, representing himself, told the court that he purchased the ice because he was going on a fishing trip.

He said the first time he smoked ice, late last year, was also a fishing trip, and a successful one at that.

“So you thought, ‘If I use ice, I’m going to catch a lot of fish?’” an incredulous Magistrate Deborah Vasta said.

Cantrill pleaded guilty and was placed on 12 months’ probation.

A conviction was recorded.
