A bayside man whom police allege copped to at least 2g pure meth hidden down a woman’s pants, has been committed to stand trial in a District Court.
Alexandra Hills man William Turupi Edwards, 48, appeared without legal representation at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Thursday.
He faces a principal charge of possessing dangerous drugs schedule 1 drug quantity of or exceeding schedule 3 but less than schedule 4.
Under Queensland law the charge encompasses a quantity threshold of 2g pure methylamphetamine and a maximum 20 or 25 years’ imprisonment.
Police will allege Edwards was in a vehicle with two people on July 10 last year in Capalaba, when he instructed a woman to hide his meth down her pants.
Edwards was charged when he allegedly copped to the secreted meth during the intercept and further told officers there was also Viagra and clipseal bags for drugs in a box.
Edwards chose to appear without legal representation and confirmed he had previously sought advice.
The court heard the case against him is strong.
“The issue is, you walk over to the police officer and said ‘they’re (the meth) mine’,” Magistrate Deborah Vasta said.
“You said, ‘when the lights came on, I asked her to hide it for me’.
“Prima facie – on the face of it – I think a jury could find that you had it in your possession unlawfully and they could find you guilty.
“I am also satisfied that there is enough evidence to put you on trial for the offence, and I am also satisfied that you understand what the proceedings are about and the possible consequences.
“And you have had some preliminary legal advice.”
Edwards was committed to stand trial at a future date in a District Court and released on bail.
