THE Redlands community will come together in aid of firefighters and victims of Australia’s devastating bushfires with a fundraiser sunset cruise.

The event will offer local residents and businesses a way to contribute to communities as they recover.

Redland City Council Mayor Karen Williams said the Sunset Cruise on the Bay bushfire appeal was created in collaboration with the council and local businesses and organisations after she had been inundated with questions by generous locals asking how they could help.

“We have all been left in disbelief by the devastation of these fires and like many in our community I have been left asking what I can do to help,” Cr Williams said.

“I am so touched by the genuine community concern of the situation and after speaking with local businesses and the Redlands Foundation have arranged a Sunset Cruise on the Bay Bushfire Appeal Saturday 25 January, departing Toondah Harbour at 5.30pm.

“Redlanders are known for their generosity and this is a chance to dig deep and bring some relief to those impacted by the fires while at the same time enjoying a sunset cruise on the bay.”

Tickets will be $100 per person for a two-hour sunset cruise including nibbles, with drinks available on board. All proceeds will go to supporting those affected by the fires.

Cr Williams said the cruise was strongly supported by SeaLink who had seen first hand the devastation of the fires on Kangaroo Island where they also operate.

“The devastation of these fires have already claimed a number of lives including two on Kangaroo Island where SeaLink operates a number of vessels and so they will be providing a barge for the cruise,” Cr Williams said.

Cr Williams said she was also working with other businesses and local members on a number of other events to help raise funds.

“There are a number of events and raffles being planned thanks to local businesses and elected members and we will announce details as they are finalised.

“I have also spoken with the Redland Foundation who will set up a dedicated bank account so anyone can donate to the cause.

“While the support I have received to date has been nothing short of remarkable it doesn’t really surprise me given the amazing community spirit that exists in the Redlands, which is why I am so proud to be Mayor of this remarkable community.”
