Qld vaccination rates revealed: Is your area pulling its weight?

We’re all being urged to roll up our sleeves and get vaccinated against Covid. But how does the vaccination rate in your area compare with the rest of the state? Take a look.

Why are some Aussies not getting vaccinated?

As the Delta strain of Covid rages across NSW and Victoria, and reaches alarming levels overseas, vaccination has become the only tool we have to stop it taking hold here.

But not every region is doing their bit, the latest Queensland Health data shows.

Just over 800,000 doses of AstraZeneca or Pfizer have been administered across the state.

Brisbane’s Metro North and Metro South regions account for almost half that number, although they also have the largest populations.

Per head of population, they have actually performed poorly.

Southsiders have been the slowest to heed the call to arms, with just 13 per cent getting the jab.

Northsiders also lagged the rest of the state, with only 21 per cent so far bothering to get vaccinated.

And only about one in every five Gold Coasters and Sunshine Coast locals have been vaccinated.

By contrast, one in three Cairns and hinterland residents and one in four people in remote Cape York and Torres Strait communities have managed to do their bit despite the challenges of geography, relatively poor health services and economic disadvantage.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been criticised for her tardiness in getting her first shot, which she got around to only last month so she could attend the Tokyo Olympics.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young, who has been widely praised for her leadership during the Covid crisis, has been vaccinated.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has urged Australians to get vaccinated, saying lockdowns could end only when most people were vaccinated — which he hoped could be achieved by year’s end as part of a four-part national plan.

Mr Morrison on Thursday apologised for the slow pace of the rollout but said Australia was catching up quickly.
