RELAX by the gardens, pool, ponds filled with fish or on the breezy deck in this well designed and landscaped Mount Ommaney residence.

On the market for the first time, the house was built by Monica and Stephen Chester who have lived there and raised a family for 25 years.

Mr Chester, a landscaper, took pleasure in creating various garden zones on the 1570sq m block.

He described the work as his “pride and joy”.

“The gardens were designed for a few reasons – for beauty reasons around the house and to create zones, such as quiet and private spots and seating areas,” he said.

“There are three ponds at the front, all with fish in them, with a waterfall connecting them all, and I built that for our children to sit out there.

“You can hear the water trickling down through the rocks from one pond to the next, it’s extremely relaxing.”

The stones used in construction of the ponds have an interesting history as Mr Chester salvaged them from demolitions in South Brisbane before the World Expo in 1988.

“The stones were originally mined by convicts at Kangaroo Point and housed over at St Helena Island before being brought to South Brisbane,” he said.

“They are all recycled, hand-split stones from the 1800s – now sitting proudly and looking great in the garden.”

The three-level house, which was designed by the couple with the help of an architect, has subtle French influences including french doors and a curved roof.

There is a downstairs rumpus, three bedrooms and a sitting room on the top level with the main bedroom and other living spaces on the second floor.

“My favourite space was the living room because it connected to almost all parts of the house such as the deck, kitchen and dining – it’s the most functional room,” Mr Chester said.

“The formal lounge room was also really great particularly when our children were growing up, we’d sit around the fireplace and play board games and all sorts of things.

“We will be sad to leave, our children especially, but it’s time to downsize and move into the next phase of life.”
