An extra 1506 undercover parking spaces will be built at Logan Hospital as part of a $61 million upgrade

Three concept designs for the new carpark building were released today for the community to choose from with consultation over the design open until Sunday night.

At eight storeys high, the carpark will be a major feature on Logan’s landscape and will not be free, unlike the existing ground-level outdoor one.

The multistorey building is part of a major expansion at the Logan Hospital and designers have worked closely with staff and locals in the initial stages to make sure the building meets community needs.

Construction will create about 150 jobs and when completed, there will be more than 2000 car parks available on or adjacent to the hospital for patients, visitors and staff.

Treasurer Cameron Dick said the focus was on getting work started fast.

“As soon as we know what the community is looking for with the design, construction will kick off and jobs will be created,” he said.

“The economic fallout from COVID-19 is going to be felt for a long time, which is why our government is committed to building more infrastructure sooner.”

The new carpark will cut the need for staff to park off-site, particularly those working late at night.

Nurses have been wary about parking in the existing car park after a man pulled a gun on a 22-year-old nurse and took off in her car in broad daylight in 2018.

A covered pedestrian bridge linking to the main hospital building will include lighting, CCTV cameras and help checkpoints on each level.

The new carpark will alleviate parking stress for some patients.

Hospital patients Ulla Ross and Tuula Pitkanen from Shailer Park, said they arrived at the hospital early for their appointment because they weren’t sure how long it would take to park.

Although fees are yet to be set, there will be concessions available for frequent users.

Prices were likely to be similar to those at other paid-for hospital carparks such as Greenslopes, where an 11-visit ticket costs $66 or St Vincent’s Northside, where it costs $22 for four hours.

Queensland Health said eligible patients and their carers experiencing financial hardship, who need to attend the hospital frequently, would be able to apply.

Those who have to attend for an extended period of time, or who have special needs and require assistance, will also be eligible.

Queensland Health said the parking fees would pay for the new building and ensure the carpark was owned by the state and not by a private company and the focus was cost recovery, not profit making.

The upgrade will pave the way for a $460 million expansion of the hospital, which will include moving the Loganlea trains station a little closer.

Once the expansion is completed, the hospital will have four endoscopy suites and around 650 beds.

A $9 million 28-bed medical ward was craned into place in 2019 and is treating patients.

Have your say on the design of Logan Hospital’s new multi-level carpark until Sunday.
