ATHLETICS — August 17, 12.50am

Boondall sprinter Alex Hartmann will make his maiden Olympic Games appearance in Rio when the gun goes off for the 200m on August 17 at 12.50am.

Hartmann, who has a personal best time of 20.45 seconds, is the fastest 200m sprinter Australian has had in nine years.

The 23-year-old, coached by Travis Venema, won the sprint double at the 2016 Australian Championships — the first to do this in three years.

The former Boondall State School and Aspley State High student said he was most inspired by “Usain Bolt’s outrageous 100m final at the 2008 Beijing Olympics”.

ATHLETICS — August 17, from 10.30pm

CEDRIC Dubler was just five when Australia’s last Olympic decathlete, Scott Ferrier, stepped on to world sport’s biggest stage in Sydney.

Sixteen years on, Dubler is preparing to shoulder the weight of expectation as the country’s major hope in Rio.

The Aspley Little Athletics product, 21, booked his ticket to Brazil with a personal-best performance at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney.

Dubler, coached by Eric Brown, snuck past the minimum qualifying score (8100) by just 14 points, capping a stunning rise to stardom after he was plagued by injury throughout the 2015 season.

He said sealing an Olympic debut was “a dream come true”.

“It’s been a goal since I started athletics to make an Olympics, the biggest sporting event in the world. I could not be happier,” Dubler said.

The young gun said he hoped to finish in the top eight in Rio.

First up for Dubler is the 100m on August 17 at 10.30pm and long jump at 11.35pm.

Tiernan, who went to St Anthony’s Catholic School and St Joseph’s College in Toowoomba, is coached by former great Irish athlete Marcus O’Sullivan.

The 21-year-old, part of Intraining Running and Triathlon Club, ran a personal best time of 13:20 in the 5000m at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, 2016.

If he makes the final, it will be on August 21 at 10.30am.

AUSTRALIAN OPALS versus SERBIA (Quarter Final) — Wednesday 12am

THE Opals are the favourites to match up against Team USA in the gold medal match at the Rio Olympics but will face another tough challenge in the knockout quarterfinal against Serbia.

Australia are undefeated this Olympics but have been far from convincing, forced to overcome late game deficits against Brazil, Japan and Belarus during the group stages.

The Opals have relied heavily on the trio of Liz Cambage, Penny Taylor and Leilani Mitchell so far at the tournament but will need contributions across the boards as they progress further.

Coach Brendan Joyce will also look for an improved defensive performance against Serbia.

The Opals feature former Kedron State School Student Cayla George as well as former SEQ Stars WNBL players Rachel Jarry and Erin Phillips.
