Northside man wakes up an instant millionaire

A Brisbane man hard hit by the coronavirus downturn will be able to tick off one of his bucket-list items – once the borders reopen – after winning $1 million in Gold Lotto.

A Chermside man says he will finally be making one of his long-held dreams a reality after waking up a millionaire thanks to last night’s Monday Gold Lotto draw.

The man, who did not wish to be named, held the only division one winning entry in Australia in the Monday and Wednesday Gold Lotto draw 4008, drawn yesterday.

He won the division one prize of $1 million.

He bought his winning marked entry at NewsExtra Chermside at the Westfield Chermside shopping centre.

“It has only just hit me. Wow. Just wow,’’ he said.

“My wife and I saw we had won at about nine o’clock last night (September 14) and we didn’t get much sleep after that.

“I have been playing those exact numbers for about 20 years. I can’t believe they’ve finally come up.

“It’s incredible. Honestly, I never thought this would happen, you hope, and you pray, but you never think you will actually win the lottery.”

He said it had been a tough year, as it had been for many people due to COVID-19.

“We will invest the prize for our future retirement,’’ he said.

“But I have always wanted to go to Easter Island. It’s been a dream of mine for some time, so hopefully when we’re allowed to travel again I can make that happen.’’

NewsExtra Chermside manager Shannon Hickey said they had sold many division one prizes across their NewsExtra stores.

Last financial year, Monday and Wednesday Gold Lotto created 86 millionaires across Australia.

The winning numbers in this Monday’s draw were 31, 16, 23, 43, 1 and 24. The supplementary numbers were 18 and 36.

Tonight’s (September 15) Oz Lotto has a top prize of $20 million, while Thursday’s Powerball has $60 million up for grabs.
