CONSULTATION on the Victoria Park transformation will remain open until after coronavirus restrictions are lifted and face-to-face community engagement sessions can take place.

The existing public golf course, at Herston, will transition from sport and recreation uses into parkland, with the popular putt putt course, driving range and function centre to remain.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has confirmed the consultation deadline will be extended past its original deadline of April 28.

It comes after Greens Cr Jonathan Sri (The Gabba) publicly slammed the council over the consultation and demanded it be extended amid the extraordinary disruption of the pandemic.

He told Quest Community News the deadline needed to be extended.

“I think reasonable people can disagree about exactly what the priorities are for Victoria Park,” he said.

“But most Brisbane residents have been so distracted by the virus that most people don’t know that this is being done right now.”

Cr Schrinner said he believed the way the virus had changed people’s daily lives had prevented people having their say.

He said rules around social distancing and public gatherings had temporarily stopped some of the planned consultation.

“We want to ensure all of the planned community engagement sessions and face-to-face meetings are held and until this can happen, consultation will remain open,” he said.

“These are unprecedented times and we owe it to residents to ensure they have every opportunity to consider the draft vision and have their say on this city-shaping project.

“Council is working hard to respond to the challenges caused by coronavirus and continue momentum on key initiatives such as Victoria Park, which will be vital to our city’s recovery and in creating more to see and do for future generations.”

Residents wanting to keep up with the progress of the project can sign up to receive email updates by visiting www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and searching ‘Victoria Park Vision’.
