Star Wars stormtroopers to play Pink Stumps Day cricket match to raise money for the McGrath Foundation

Stormtroopers will be served up lollipops as a concession to their notoriously poor visibility in an event in Brisbane this weekend that might be the only one like it anywhere.

The umpire may strike back this weekend, but it will be for a good cause.

Members of the Redback Garrison 501st Legion will again “pink-up” their stormtrooper uniforms and take to the pitch for its annual Pink Stumps Day cricket match to raise money for the McGrath Foundation.

The garrison’s commanding officer Adam Lochowicz said the summer heat would be just one of the perils players would have to overcome.

“It’s hard. Stormtroopers and sandtroopers have very poor mobility and poor visibility,” Mr Lochowicz said.

“We ‘lollipop’ the balls a bit just so they can see the bugger.”

But that generosity quickly dries up if they start hitting the bowling around the park.

“It’s the only place in the world where two teams of stormtroopers play a team sport,” Mr Lochowicz said

“It’s pretty crazy when you think about it.”

Child spectators are encouraged to wear their Star Wars costumes and bring light sabres.

The Redback Garrison aims to raise more than $2000.

Australian fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath has been invited.

The match will be played at Stafford Heights State School, Redwood St, Stafford Heights, from 10.30am-1.30pm on Saturday, March 9, 2019.
