A new era has dawned on the powerhouse Mermaids water polo club, with the organisation’s first senior Queensland representative emerging.

A new era has dawned on the powerhouse Mermaids water polo club, with the organisation’s first senior Queensland representative emerging.

Lara Owen, Kasey Dalziel, Kate Blew and Matilda Elliott have been selected in the Queensland Thunder National League squad.

The Mermaids, based out of the Yeronga Park pool, were established just five years ago by ex-representative player Nicola Johnson.

“Queensland Thunder play in the highest level of competition in Australia,’’ coach Johnson said.

She said selections were a milestone moment and another step forward in the progress of the club.

Representative selection followed the club winning a historic three gold medals and one silver medal at the Water Polo Australia youth championships earlier in the year.

The club is on the verge of another swag of success, with 12 girls teams making the BWPI grand finals to be played on Saturday.

“We are in the 12A, 13A, 14A, 14C, 15A, 15C, 16A, 16C, 17A 17B and 18A finals,’’ Johnston said. Many were unbeaten.

“We are so proud of the achievements of these girls and their coaches,’’ Johnson said.

“We also had our two boys teams make the semi finals in only our second year of fielding boys teams.

“In the BWPI competition, neither of them made it through to the grand finals but it was a great achievement for both of them to finish in the top four in their age group.’’
