GPS, the elite QGSSSA schoolgirl competition and Queensland School Sport remain in limbo

GPS, QGSSSA schoolgirl sport and Queensland School Sport were plunged into limbo last month with the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.

GPS ANNOUNCES TERM 1 PREMIERS

At a time when the NRL is considering a conference system at four different locations to scramble the NRL back to life, so to was the GPS looking at innovative ways to juggle and make term 2 or 3 sporting seasons work.

“The GPS can confirm that term 2 and 3 Sport and Activities are currently paused, with various models being explored to deliver postponed and modified competitions for students in term 2 and potentially term 3 subject to and in line with Government and Governing Body guidelines,’’ the association said in a recent statement.

Term 3 is scheduled for the blue riband GPS First XV rugby competition.

The GPS board will meet again in May to discuss its next step.

The Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA), which oversees Brisbane’s elite schoolgirl sport, will also reconvene in Term 2 “to review the status of future sports and trainings’’.

The association “continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation as it evolves, keeping all key stakeholders informed of any updates or changes to the current status’’.

Meanwhile, the State Government run Queensland School Sports said a “decision has been made that cancellation of all representative school sport events will continue until 30 June 2020’’.

“The representative school sport program includes district, regional, state, national, interstate and international competitions,’’ the organisation stated on its website.

“Please ensure that you have cancelled all bookings associated with representative school sport events made for this time period.

“The department will continue to provide ongoing communication as Australia’s response to COVID-19 evolves.’’
