Atherton, 18, a past student of Brisbane Girls Grammar School, has come a long way since learning to swim in the Milton State School pool.
Her career ramped up when she moved from primary school to attend secondary school at Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
It was there she came under the watch of Lush and has been an eye-catching junior since.
Last year she gained confidence by being a bronze medallist at December’s FINA World Swimming Championships (short course).
Atherton touched out teammate Sheridan, a past student of Mt St Michael’s College.
It was Sheridan’s second individual medal of the meeting, having earlier won silver in the 400m IM.
