SPEED limits will drop to 40km/h on sections of a key Brisbane corridor for at least a year for construction on a $61 million road project.
Construction has begun on to convert Murphy Rd and Ellison Rd roundabout to a signalised intersection and widen the corresponding roadway to be completed next year.
Homes and land from private property owners as well as parkland from Marchant Park and 7th Brigade Park were resumed last year.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Murphy Rd and Ellison Rd roundabout was “a well-known black spot” with 11 accidents were reported there over a five-year period.
“This upgrade is expected to reduce the risk of crashes by 40 per cent at the intersections of Murphy and Ellison roads as well as Kittyhawk Drive and Butt St,” he said.
He said the roundabout was used by more than 37,000 vehicles every day and reached capacity at peak periods.
“Without this congestion-busting upgrade, motorists using this intersection would be facing delays of up to 10-minutes and bumper-to-bumper queues by 2031,” he said.
Cr Quirk said the corridor was an important link between Chermside Shopping Centre, the Geebung train station, Gympie Rd and the Marchant and 7th Brigade parks.
Infrastructure chairman Amanda Cooper said the corridor upgrade would deliver benefits for pedestrians, cyclists and buses with signalised crossings, on-road cycle lanes and indented bus lanes.
There will also be a new car park with 80 spots for Marchant Park and 7th Brigade Park.
The majority of works will be undertaken between 7am and 5pm.
