THE speed limit will be reduced along a busy road at Sandgate’s foreshore to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Council has announced a 1km section along Flinders Pde, between Second Ave and Ninth Ave, will be reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h by the end of the year.

Cr Jared Cassidy (Deagon) said the speed reduction would go a long way to making the area safer for all users.

“Flinders Pde was identified through (Council’s) Move Safe Brisbane consultation as an area that locals thought should be made safer,” he said.

“Weekends see such a large number of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists interacting in this area.

“We have the amazing bay and people love to use it and visit it and we need to make it easier to connect to the rest of Sandgate, especially if you are on foot.”

Infrastructure Chair Amanda Cooper said, as well as new speed signs and line markings, ‘High Active Transport User Area’ signs would be installed to warn motorists of the high volume of pedestrians using the precinct.

“Evidence suggests that, just as in the CBD, pedestrian incidents in the suburbs are largely due to inattention and impatience, with pedestrians walking out in front of vehicles,” Cr Cooper said.

“Lower speed limits provide all road users more time to make safer decisions and have been shown to reduce the likelihood of crashes and the severity of injuries.

“That’s why Council will reduce the speed limit along a stretch of Flinders Pde in the coming months to boost safety for people walking or riding to get fish and chips, visit local cafes or to enjoy the beautiful foreshore.”

Cr Cassidy said he would also like to see more pedestrian crossings along Flinders Pde.

“I’m really pleased I’ve been able to secure funding for one in this year’s budget, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues near the Sandgate pool,” he said.

“I would also like Council to look at more treatments at these crossings to make them even safer. Some of these could include raised platforms or bright road markings.”
