Scores to hang wreaths on fences to mark ANZAC Day

Fences across Brisbane’s inner north will be dotted with wreaths this ANZAC Day, after a local florist was “overwhelmed” with orders from customers looking for new ways to mark April 25.

A BRISBANE florist has been overwhelmed with people wanting wreaths to hang on their front fences to mark ANZAC Day in isolation.

Alba Roses manager Helen Jackson said customers ordering the commemorative garlands from her Hendra shop had increased four-fold with the florist and two staff busy producing 60 wreaths, up from its usual 15 at this time of year.

She said families were wanting to hang them on letterboxes to mark the day despite social distancing, and she also decided to offer make-it-yourself wreath kits to those wanting to make their own from home this year.

“The response has been overwhelming,” she said.

“Some of the elderly people have been taking the option of us making it here (at the florist), but the families, the singles have been embracing the DIY option.”

“I think what it is, is they’re being given an opportunity to acknowledge ANZAC Day in their houses as well as a project for the kids.”

The Jarrett family were one of the first to buy the kits so daughter Lauren could make a video laying the wreath for her school memorial.

“While we made it, we discussed the importance of ANZAC Day and how many people have given their lives to make our nation the place we enjoy today.”

Her mother, Sonja Jarrett, said she hoped making a wreath would become a new family tradition.
