Residents in one of the southeast’s fastest growing suburbs have called for the Queensland Government to build a new police station.

An e-petition posted to the Queensland parliament has called for a new police station to be built at Murrumba Downs has been signed by more than 100 people.

The petition, lodged by Karen Haddock from Kallangur, points to the area’s growing population as why a station is needed.

“Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House our community is one of the fastest-growing in the Moreton Bay region,” the petition reads.

“We have also seen crime increase drastically in suburbs throughout the area. We need an increased police presence.

“Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to secure land and start the process to establish a new police station in Murrumba Downs.”

There are currently police stations in the nearby suburbs of Petrie, North Lakes and Kallangur.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said police were not restricted by the station they were based at.

“The Queensland Police Service employs a borderless policing philosophy backed by the latest technology that sees police deployed in numbers to where they’re needed, when they’re needed,” he said.

“The result is that police officers spend little time in police stations and the vast majority of their time out on the road.

“The consequence of that is a mobile, agile police service that responds quickly to demands for service.

“It means that members of the community see more police out and about, more often.”

Mr Ryan said Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll made police resources allocations “free of political interference”.
