WHAT does Brisbane’s own queen of erotic fiction do when she hears the city is running out of toilet paper due to the pandemic panic buying?
She imagines how many people would buy bidets and exactly what they might get up to with them and then she turns that into an increasingly popular late night virtual erotic short-story reading session.
Award-winning writer Krissy Kneen is sharing via Zoom and in conjunction with one of Australia’s finest indie bookshops, the experimental project Lust in the Time of Coronavirus.
For just $5 (proceeds will help support staffing and managing Avid events) participants will watch, every Thursday night, as Kneen or one of her guest readers share the stories which will form part of a new collection of erotic works inspired by the pandemic.
Kneen, who lives in Brisbane and is the tour-de-force behind the hugely popular Avid Reader events program, said one of the only things to help “shut-out the world” at this time was reading.

The stories that morphed into the 18+ live erotic reading, now up to Week 4, began for Kneen as a way to escape from what is happening in the world right now.
“I had a grant to write a book about a pandemic and I just feel too overwhelmed to continue to write that.
“It was going to be an erotic-thriller and so I thought why not turn my energy towards some erotic stories.”
“People will be shut in for quite some time and sex won’t be far from people’s minds whether they are with their partners or alone.”

She said the stories have become a “good way of engaging with the crisis without falling in to despair”.
Turning almost into a diary of what is happening now, the episodes are packed with twists and turns even featuring (Episode 2) a woman is “obsessed with Dr Norman Swan, ABC RN’s voice of the pandemic”, Kneen said.
And it’s not every day you can type LUST as the discount code when you are purchasing award-winning fiction but Kneen’s memoir Affection and fiction An Uncertain Grace, Steeplechase, Triptych and award-winning collection of poetry Eating My Grandmother are all available through Avid with 10 per cent off the titles if you use LUST as the discount code.
