A fast expanding doughnut business founded by a famed Brisbane chef will open its first store in Brisbane next month.
David Moore, the businessman behind Milton’s successful but ill-fated riverside Drift restaurant, is one of four Brisbane identities behind OMG Decadent Donuts which launched in 2019.
It now has 52 franchisees across Australia.
OMG Decadent Donuts will open their first retail shop in Queensland in the Oriel Market precinct at Ascot in mid-October.
Mr Moore turned to donoughts after his restaurant Drift was lost in the devastating 2011 floods and while that part of his career was lost, his love for food was not.
The restaurateur is known for guiding several of Brisbane‘s and Queensland’s leading restaurants but it was his partner’s intolerances that sparked a new business venture.
Mr Moore started playing with dehydrated natural fruits, vegetables and spices and mixing them in to funky combinations and blending them with sugars.
Initially, he was going to use his bespoke sugars by dusting them on regular doughnuts but David’s partner Andrew Clarke, intolerant to gluten and dairy, persuaded him to try making a doughnut mix that he could also enjoy.
They then set off to create a mix that was free from as many allergens as possible, but which also tasted great.
“Being in the restaurant game in the past made me realise just how many people have dietary requirements due to health or beliefs,” Mr Moore said.
“The demand for the doughnuts has grown rapidly and it’s not unusual for people to drive two hours to get them.”
Initially the pair began selling their delectable doughnuts at farmers type markets, festivals, expos and events but the doughnut business was getting busier and busier and they thought they might be onto something.
The duo joined forces with well-known marketing maven Di O’Reilly and her husband Steve Morris and around a kitchen table at Ascot in 2019, their new business was born.
There are currently 52 licensees throughout Australia but Ms O’Reilly said more and more inquiries were coming in for licensed regions.
“We’ll get to a hundred probably by this time next year and they’re all mum and dad operators,” Ms O’Reilly said.
“We have mothers coming up and crying because they can finally give their child a simple treat.
“If you have a kid who can’t have what their friends are having it’s hard, and not just for kids adults as well.”
There are 12 different flavour combinations free from gluten, wheat, egg, dairy, nut, yeast and sulfite set to be available.
The sugars dusting the OMG Decadent Donuts are made from whole fruit and vegetables, flavours include Beet-a-licious (beetroot, cinnamon, ginger), Berry Sinful (fresh raspberries, cacao, salt, chilli), Dusty Queen (cinnamon, navel oranges), and Spicy Ranga (ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, cloves).
Ms O’Reilly said the snacks were also vegan, halal and kosher.
“Our dream is that at a kids party … pretty much everyone could have it, you don’t have to have different food for different people,” she said.
“It’s very much a family focused business.
“They’re all made hot and fresh in front of you, so they’re not a doughnut you would sell at the airport.”
All the fruits and veggies are locally sourced, dehydrated and ground.
Mr Moore said when it came to location, Ascot was a natural choice.
“We decided our first company owned shop should be near where we all live,” he said.
“It’s literally around the corner from Di and Steve’s place and Andrew and I are maybe two minutes away.
“We’re biased towards engaging locals for everything from shopfitters to artists to staff.
“This area is such a great community and we all love being part of it. “
