THE Bracken Ridge Library and ward office will close next week so they can be demolished to make way for the new $6 million library complex.

The new library and ward office are being built in the former carpark adjacent to the current facility.

The ward office will close at 5pm on Friday, September 27 and the library at 4pm on Saturday, September 28.

They will reopen in the new building on Wednesday, November 20.

The new library will include two public meeting rooms with 24/7 access, a deck overlooking the existing playground, a children’s area, quiet reading area, eight computer internet stations, RFID technology for easy customer self-service borrowing and returns, a lift, a terrace with Wi-Fi access, a coffee cart and access to a turfed square, and undercover and outdoor parking for about 50 cars.

Cr Amanda Cooper (Bracken Ridge) is very excited about the new library.

“I think residents are going to be really delighted with the new beautiful facility,” she said.

“It is about double the size of the current library.

“We have lots of community groups who have been using the library for a long time, but I think there will be opportunities for even more groups to use the new facility.

“A lot of residents have been watching the new building evolve and there’s a lot of very positive feedback about it.”

The current library building will be demolished from October 8 and there will be no access to the site during that week.

The adjoining hall will operate as normal during this time, but Sandbag is directing clients to their Sandgate office on Rainbow St during the week of demolition.

Cr Cooper said anyone with borrowed books could return them to any other Brisbane City Council library.

There will also be return bins near the hall during the temporary closure, except for the week of demolition.

However Cr Cooper said due dates for books from Bracken Ridge Library would be extended until November 30.

People with books placed on hold are encouraged to contact the library and organise for them to be collected from another site; the nearest libraries are at Sandgate, Zillmere and Chermside.

The ward office will relocate to Council’s North Regional Business Centre, 375 Hamilton Rd, Chermside, which also houses Chermside Library. Contact details will remain the same.

The new library will be officially opened on Saturday, November 23.
