WHAT’S AT STAKE

Aspley electorate

Aspley is a marginal Labor seat which could go either way this state election.

The two frontrunners are incumbent MP Bart Mellish from the Labor Party and former Brisbane City Councillor Amanda Cooper form the Liberal National Party.

Cooper is going all out with her election promises, including a $90 million overpass at Beams Rd, across Gympie Rd, $100,000 in funding to help the Aspley Memorial Bowls Club, $200,000 to upgrade the Bald Hills Memorial Hall, $500,000 for the Bald Hills State School and $500,000 for a cycle and pedestrian pathway on Albany Creek Rd.

Mellish brought out the big guns with his own promise to build a $50 million Beams Rd overpass, with construction slated to begin in 2021. He’s also promised to build noise barriers along Gympie Rd in Bald Hills, $100,000 to help the Aspley Hornets FC join the East Coast competition next year and $10 million to build a volleyball centre at the Craigslea State High School.

Sandgate electorate

Sandgate is considered to be a safe Labor seat this election, with incumbent MP Stirling Hinchliffe expected to reclaim the seat this election.

Should he be re-elected he’s promised residents $128 million towards the Beams Rd overpass in Fitzgibbon, $28.9 million to build a robotics and advanced manufacturing centre on the northside, $5 million for a performing arts hall at Sandgate High and $500,000 for Bracken Ridge State High School.

He’s up against Clark Siemsen from the LNP, who has strongly pushed his party’s promise for a $300 rego rebate, and Miree Le Roy from Greens, who has promised $44 million to go towards Sandgate schools.

Nudgee electorate

Incumbent MP Leanne Linard is the favourite to win the Labor stronghold seat of Nudgee. Linard has promised the community a $500,000 boost to out-of-school-hours care at Boondall State School, a $200,000 commitment for the feasibility study into the Banyo Road intersection upgrade, $150,000 to upgrade play equipment at Virginia State School as part of a $450,000 investment in new, modern school facilities in the electorate and $300,000 towards an upgrade to the admin space at Northgate State School.

Her closest competitor is expected to be Ryan Shaw from the LNP, who announced a $60,000 commitment to the Norths Rugby Club to help fund new change rooms and bathroom facilities for female players, a focus on police resourcing and a plan to get hoons off our streets, including covert CCTV cameras located in hooning hot spots with a direct feed to police stations and officer iPads, and tyre-shredding antiskid road treatment.
