A Brisbane hotel room was covered in blood following the alleged manslaughter of 18-year-old Kane Alexanderson, a court has heard.

Joshua Lindsay Elkerton-Sandy, 21, faced the Supreme Court on Monday, February 27 for the fifth day of trial proceedings after pleading not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged Mr Alexanderson and five other people confronted Elkerton-Sandy and his friends at an apartment in Brisbane’s iStay River City on January 26, 2020 after words were exchanged between the groups of “enemy friends” across balconies.

Both the prosecution and defence agree Elkerton-Sandy caused the death of Mr Alexanderson “using a knife”, so the question is did he act in self-defence?

Before the Crown closed its case on Monday morning, a statement of facts admitted by both the prosecution and defence was read to the court.

Following a post-mortem examination it was agreed by both parties that Mr Alexanderson died of multi-organ failure and a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain, secondary to cardiac arrest.

Before he died on February 1, 2020, he suffered a number of severe injuries including a six-centimetre-deep “V-shaped” stab wound to the chest, which pierced his heart, and a four-centimetre-deep stab wound to the back.

Swab tests of knives and blood found in the iStay unit after the incident revealed some other indisputable facts.

The court heard DNA from three people, potentially including both Mr Alexanderson and Elkerton-Sandy, were found on the blade of one particular knife while blood believed to be from Elkerton-Sandy was found on the handle.

Elkerton-Sandy’s DNA was also found in a swab taken from his own fingernails, along with DNA likely to be Mr Alexanderson’s.

But the DNA of just one person was found in blood stains, pools, and splatters all over the iStay apartment and balcony including on the wall, a living room table, the balcony floor, a chair, and the apartment floor. It is very likely to be that of Mr Alexanderson.

The prosecution’s case came to a close Monday morning and the jury was dismissed for the day.

The trial continues.
