National champion Isabella Harte led the charge for Mayne Harriers Athletics Club at the Queensland School Sport Track & Field State Championships which finished in Cairns earlier this week.
The St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School student won the 3000m in a canter in her age group, but was forced to pull out all stops in the 1500m when challenged by Moreton Bay College student Emma Bible.

“It looked like Emma was going to get her at the finish line, but she went into another gear,’’ said Harte’s coach Andrew Iselin.
“The 1500m was a really good tactical race,’’ he said, noting how Harte timed her sprint finish.
Harte, who on Tuesday was crowned City North News Local Sports Star of the Year, will now attend the nationals in December.
There was success also for St Patrick’s College student Cooper Wellman.
The Bracken Ridge resident won the 13 years 90m by hurdles and also the 200m hurdles

Wavell State High School student Callum Stacey, representing Mayne Harriers and Met North in the 15 years boys, won his 400m in 49.75.
It was a stunning effort by Stacey, a rugby league player who has only been training for athletics for two months.
“He was not too far off the record despite having only trained for two months,’’ Iselin said.
“He ran at Met North and broke the record running, 52 plus in the 400m.
“He also won the 100m final and finished sixth, which was directly after the 400m heats.’’
“If he continues to train, he is promising. He has so much talent.’’
Caleb Law also struck gold, winning the 16 years 110m hurdles, was second in the 200m and third in the 100m.
Iselin said his minor placings were outstanding considering the hot field included two highly acclaimed national athletes.
Sidonie Harvey produced a series of outstanding performances competing in the 17 years age group.
Harvey was second in the long jump, second in the 400m hurdles, third in triple jump and third in the 100m hurdles.
“Last year at states she false started in the sprint hurdles and was disqualified,’’ Iselin said.
“Since then she has been working to get back up to that level and she definitely made up for it.’’
Isla Watson, who trains under Andrew’s sister, Sharon Iselin, was third in the 15 years steeplechase.
There was more gold, this time from Tom Stunden won the discus and was third in shot put.
The Brisbane Grammar School student trains under Julian Wruck who does some field work with athletes at Mayne Harriers.
