The owners of a Mitchelton cafe hope a 14m-long painting by a well-known artist will help make it destination for art lovers.

Last week Mt Nebo artist Drapl (Travis Vinson) worked on the giant piece, which will be a permanent fixture at Hobby Lane in Blackwood St.

Drapl’s works have become landmarks at Red Hill Cinemas, The Gap, Banyo, and in Fortitude Valley.

But he is famous nationally for the striking 30m-high murals he painted on grain silos in the south western Queensland town Thallon with Joel Fergie (The Zookeeper).

Drapl, who has 14,000 Instagram followers, said he was not given any specific direction by Hobby Lane owners Peter Shaw and Tania Daly-Shaw.

“I am continuing a bit of a series I’m doing to make my work speak to people on many different levels,” Drapl said.

His works were inspired by a quote or idea he wanted to express and he usually started the process by listening to music and making “a mess of colours”.

“I use a lot of different tools to make my murals, from garden sprayers to brooms, paint guns, house paint and spray paint,” Drapl said.

Mrs Daly-Shaw, who had a background in art and design, said she and Peter loved to share their space with other creatives. “Before joining the hospitality industry I owned and ran my own graphic design studio, and Peter also has a strong artistic flair, which can be seen in his food creations, so we are both creatives in our own way,” Mrs Daly-Shaw said. “Commissioning an artwork from someone as innovative and respected as Drapl will add another dimension to the creative vibe we already have at Hobby Lane.”
