THE Hindu Society of Queensland is planning to build a temple and community hall in Bracken Ridge.
The society, which has been based at Boondall since 1991, has a development application before council for a 9281 sqm site at 373 Bracken Ridge Road.
The proposed two-storey temple includes a courtyard and landscaped area.
The ground floor has a dining hall, kitchen, toilets, office, store room and veranda, with a lift to level one which features a large seating area, stage and an outdoor prayer area.
The proposed hall includes a ground floor parking area with stairs and a lift to level 1 with an office, storerooms, bar, toilets, kitchen, rear terrace, entry terrace, hall area and back stage area.
The plans include 78 carparks for the hall and 50 for the temple.
The applicant states: “The proposed development will add another public place that will enhance the lifestyle in the surrounding area as it creates a space that can be accessed and used by not just the Hindu community but other groups who will use the community hall for community events and festivals.”
In other documents, the applicant stated Census 2016 data revealed the Indian population in Australia had grown to 455,389, up from 295,362 in Census 2011.
“This is almost a 50 per cent increase in the Indian population in five years and at that rate of growth it is essential for the community to have a place of worship.
“There is only one other small private Hindu temple in Brisbane’s northern suburbs and the proposed development would be a valuable addition for the current and future community.”
The area is already home to a number of culturally-diversereligious groups with the Masjid Taqwa Muslim mosque on Telegraph Rd, Bald Hills and the Singh Sabha Sikh temple on Lemke Rd, Taigum.
