The month of January was booming for business in Brisbane’s north, where a large number of local entrepreneurs made a go of it with an exciting new selection of beer gardens, cafes, shops and more.
With so much happening across the northern suburbs, it can be difficult to keep up with the changing business landscape that sees new ventures launching, new locations opening and new management promising bigger and better things.
Quest Community News has broken down the biggest changes you need to know about in your community over the last week, with details on how to support local businesses in what is traditionally a quiet month of trade.
MATSURI PATISSERIE LE BRISSY
The flowers that artfully adorn the cakes at Matsuri Patisserie Le Brissy have often been confused for the real thing, but everything you see is hand-piped buttercream and entirely edible.
Boondall home-baker Matsuri Giang launched her cake and dessert-making company last week, with buttercream flower cakes her specialty.
For Valentine’s Day Matsuri will be offering customers the chance to say, ‘I love you’ with sweet, sugary flowers carefully created by hand.

THE CEDAR SOCIAL
A brand new beer garden opened at Samford Rd in Ferny Hills on January 20.
Featuring a beautiful fairy-lit archway that leads into a green space with picnic tables, live music and homemade pizzas, this impressive venue aims to be “the perfect, casual local”.

GREEN LIFE WAREHOUSE
The plant-based cafe and health food store Green Life Warehouse had its official launch at the weekend, welcoming scores of North Lakes residents (and their dogs) to sample the latest in eco-friendly products.
The warehouse, located at 7 Flinders Pde, is stocked full of everything a person could need to create an environmentally sustainable life, including food packaging, homewares and cleaning products.
Their cafe serves vegan treats, organic coffee and dog treats.

CAFE UN:NAMED
A charming new cafe opened on Railway Pde at Geebung on January 20, boasting a menu filled with Korean dishes such as Bi Bim Bap and spicy chicken.
Co-owner Seoul Chun is serving up The Cat’s Pyjamas roasted coffee alongside some innovative breakfast items such as the ‘Croffle’, a croissant toasted with chocolate in a waffle iron.
Reviews are already overwhelmingly positive, with cafe-goers saying the staff are friendly and the outdoor tables welcoming for dogs.

INK ENVY COSMETIC TATTOOING
Cosmetic tattooing is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as both men and women seek a hassle-free approach to their daily beauty routines.
Nationally accredited cosmetic tattoo artist Beth Horsburgh opened her new home-based business in Griffin at the end of January, offering semipermanent brow, lip and liner solutions.
Cosmetic tattooing can last between one to two years, which allows for adjustment to shape and placement as the face ages or trends change.

MERGE CAFE
A yummy little cafe opened at Laura St in Clontarf on January 18, hoping to offer locals “a peaceful place to sit and chat (among) a wonderful selection of homemade food and beautiful gifts”.
Carefully-designed to appeal to locals, the cafe has a welcome mix of the healthy (Naked Berry smoothies, for example) and the not-so-healthy (Choc chip waffles, anyone?), with plenty of grab-and-go options for people on their way to work.
The cafe is family and dog friendly and open weekdays from 6.30am - 1.30pm and Saturdays from 7am to 1pm.

CRUMBS BY MERRIWEATHER
Kimberley Merriweather is a home-baker turned business-owner who creates delicious treats with a twist: Her cakes come prepared in beautiful, layered jars and her cookies offer personalised messages custom-designed for special occasions.
The Griffin baker launched on January 23 and offers local pick-up and is also stocked in BLK BOX CO and Pam’s Affordable Gifts, where customers can try everything from the Oreo explosion cake to the Banoffee made with homemade caramel.
Valentine’s Day specials are available for $10 and under.

NELLA’S GOURMET TUCKER
Pine Rivers shoppers who frequented the Strathpine Markets have long lined up for the Gotzinger German sausages offered at Nella’s Gourmet Tucker, allowing the popular small business to finally expand into a brick and mortar store at the Lawnton Fruit Market.
The cafe opened just before Christmas and began serving dinner on January 6, offering hungry customers their seven flavours of signature sausages as well as burgers, fish and chips, and more.

THE SISTAHOODAU
Two Bald Hills sister-in-laws have banded together to create a collective of women-owned, Australian-based sustainable small businesses to sell in their online store.
Though the store went live in November, it truly hit its stride in the new year, with an influx of products designed to “help you appreciate, strengthen and love yourselves”.
Owners Nella and Shelley carefully curate the store, which offers everything from sunscreen to earrings and lip polishes, and hope to one day be able to contribute a portion of the proceeds to a women’s health charity.

JABIRU CAFE
The Jabiru Cafe in Nundah has undergone quite the transformation with new ownership and a brand new Mediterranean-inspired menu.
New additions include six different types of eggs Benedict, each with their own homemade hollandaise sauce, as well as french toast with bacon and maple syrup, among others.
Another notable change is the cafe’s opening hours, as it will be open on weekends from 7am to 3pm for the first time.
