Gympie Rd named and shamed as city’s most dangerous

It was already the worst road in the city for crashes but now a new danger stretch has emerged, giving it three in the city’s top 10.

Notorious Gympie Rd now has three stretches in the city’s 10 worst crash black spots.

GYMPIE Rd been named and shamed as Brisbane’s worst road for car crashes for the second year in a row, with three stretches making the list of the city’s top 10 crash sites.

The 2019 AAMI Crash Index revealed the stretch of the busy road between Chermside and Aspley was still the worst for crashes but the stretch to Kedron has now been added to the AAMI Crash Index’s top 10.

“We now have a 6km stretch of road in Brisbane, which has seen an increased number of collisions in the space of 12 months,” AAMI’s Head of Motor Claims, Anna Cartwright, said.

“Gympie Rd is a major transport route into the CBD, with buses sharing the road with heavy transport vehicles, and commuters driving to and from work.

“The Chermside precinct also continues to boom with more people living, working and visiting the area, including the Westfield Shopping Centre and Prince Charles Hospital.

“There is a high volume of traffic on this major arterial connecting the CBD to the northern suburbs and Sunshine Coast, which is only contributing to the dangers on this road.”

Another crash on Gympie Rd, adding to its reputation.

The insurer’s analysis of more than 340,000 motor accident insurance claims across the country during the 2018/19 fiancial year showed Brisbane’s top crash blackspots were:
