Distraught residents are calling for the demountable building, that was the site of a horrific gang attack that left one man dead and multiple people injured, to be removed from a park in Brisbane’s north.
A petition to the Brisbane City Council claims the blood stains and debris remain on site at O’Callagan Park in Zillmere, posing a health and safety risk to the community.

Bats and blades: How police allege Zillmere park carnage unfolded
One stabbed to death, multiple injured in gang fight at Zillmere
“There is blood splatter on the walls, on the floor, and blood smears on the railings,” said petition organiser Jessica Herbert.
“The floor also has two large burn holes from where there have been small fires.”
The group of young men, who police allege used bats and edged blades during the fatal attack on September 14, were often sighted partying by the building which was previously used by kids’ baseball teams and the annual pigeon races.
“It has been a site of congregation and partying for months for youths, they leave their rubbish and smash glass bottles in the park and around the demountable building,” Ms Herbert said, suggesting the removal would encourage the gangs to gather elsewhere.
Friends and family of the deceased gathered at the site on Tuesday afternoon to mourn the loss together, mere metres away from the faded yellow outline where 19-year-old Girum Mekonnen fell.
Flowers lay beside the spot, with a note from St Matthew’s Anglican Church that read, ‘Rest in peace, young man’.”
Councillor Jared Cassidy said he has held several meetings with community groups and councillors over the past week and there are plans in motion to remove the building.
Ms Herbert said she hoped the petition would act as a “kick in the tushy” for the council to work faster.
North Star Football Club, who lease the fields beside the murder scene, declined to comment on the petition.
Police have been contacted for comment.
