Users of the Everton Park library look like being winners at this weekend’s council election.

The LNP has promised a new $10 million library if it retains control of Brisbane City Council, while Labor has promised a $2 million upgrade, with the possibility of more after that.

Councillor Tracy Davis (LNP, McDowall) said a new Everton Park library would provide more space through community meeting rooms and offer a bigger range of library activities and events.

Her Labor opponent, Liam Culverhouse said the commitment was “well and truly” overdue.

Mr Culverhouse said Labor would spend $2 million on an upgrade but that may be increased “down the track” if it took control of the council.

Cr Davis said the council had already purchased land at Fallon Park, which adjoined the library, to expand the park as part of the Green Future Fund. There would also be a new entry into Fallon Park from South Pine Rd and $500,000 of new playground and park facilities.

Mr Culverhouse said Labor had committed to upgrade the library during the 2016 election campaign.

“After 16 years why now, a week before the election, have they brought this out?”

“I’m amazed it’s taken 16-plus years and the councillor petitioning herself to get it done,” Mr Culverhouse said.
