A young Ipswich man gripped by drugs has been sentenced for his role in a north Brisbane home invasion last month.

Evan Michael Vay Flitton, 21, sat alone and remorseful in a video room from jail yesterday as he faced four charges linked to the May 3 home invasion at Ferny Hills.

Flitton had turned himself into police not long after the crime, and was charged with deprivation of liberty, enter a dwelling and commit and indictable offence, common assault and wilful damage — which he pleaded guilty to Thursday.

The court heard Flitton, a bricklayer from Eastern Heights, was one of three people who stormed the house, to settle a $200 drug debt.

The court heard the trio held one man — the brother of the person the trio was targeting — against his will and threatened the life of his parents.

The three damaged property and made off with items including $1000 in tools and a bag of white powder after Flitton told them “we’ve been here long enough, let’s go”.

The court heard Flitton, who had no criminal history, served 29 days pre-sentence custody after handing himself in.

The court heard Flitton — who had previously worked in plumbing and traffic control — had “fallen into” the wrong crowd and had started using drugs before the offences.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy said the offence was “described as unsophisticated but serious none the less”.

Magistrate Hennessy cited Flitton’s youth, remorse, lack of criminal history and cooperation with police while handing down a sentence of two years’ probation which would include drug and alcohol counselling.

No conviction was recorded.
