A north Brisbane bakery which first opened its doors in the ‘70s will reveal a mega makeover next week.

After 50 years as Zillmere Bakery, the shop will go by the name Cà Phê In when it reopens on Tuesday, June 21.

The shop, at Handford Rd, Zillmere, will operate under new owners, Kim Ly Mckimmin, and Donny Nguyen and feature tasty additions to its much-loved menu.

But don’t let the new look fool you, local bread shop will still operate with the same love and dedication as its original family, with the shop being passed down to Donny from his parents Phuc Nguyen and Thuy Tran who have run the Zillmere Bakery since 1997.

“They were about to sell the shop, and I thought there was so much history there,” Donny said.

“That bakery has been in our family for so long and I just saw this huge opportunity.”

While Donny’s parents have run the business since 1997, the shop has been home to a bakery for almost 50 years, after it was initially opened in the 1970s.

“I just really wanted to keep a hold on the tradition of the place and keep it a bakery,” he said.

The university educated 27-year-old had worked as a pharmacist for five years and also studied law before deciding he wanted to run his own business.

“I’ve always wanted to own something myself.”

The new bakery cleverly named, Cà Phê In, is the Vietnamese word for coffee.

“It also sounds like caffeine if you say it fast enough.”

The bakery closed in March this year to make way for new renovations, which will be complete in a few short days.

“We’ve made the place nicer and newer, and we’re adding in coffee and drinks to our menu.”

“The whole layout has changed, a completely new shop.”

The bakery is a favourite among locals in the northside, and the new owners promise they will be keeping some favourites around.

“We’re definitely known for our meat pies, I would definitely recommend.

“We also sell Vietnamese pork rolls, we started selling those mid last year.

“Our fresh cream doughnut, there’s so much cream in it and it’s huge.”

The new owners said they could not wait to open up shop in just a few short days.

“People are starting to get antsy for the opening and we’re just getting really keen to open up and start work.”
