A pair of Brisbane brothers with more than four decades of combined experience in the hospitality industry are bringing their expertise and ingenuity to the local market, with plans to open a boujee new cafe of Southern California-inspired dishes, locally-sourced coffee, and “no guilt” cocktails next month.

Renovation works are currently underway at 62 Suez St, Mitchelton to transform what was previously a landmark corner store into a foodie hotspot while maintaining the site’s post-war charm.

Mitch and Antler is expected to open on February 15.

Co-owners Tze-Huei Choo and Chewie Choo will spend the next six weeks fitting out the store themselves — keeping the design simple with a green, white, and blush pink theme — and finalising the menu.

“The menu is quite small, about 11 dishes,” Tze-Huei Choo said.

“My notion has always been ‘keep it small but cook it well’.

“And the menu will change according to seasonality.”

Mr Choo said his aim was to veer off the traditional road so often taken by cafes when choosing menu items and “stretch the fun” in breakfast.

Eggs Benedict and Aussie fry-ups will still be on offer, but with an Asian and South American twist.

The cafe will also offer a variety of “no guilt” — non-alcoholic — cocktails, with brand Seedlip as their base, to provide an alternative way of drinking to Brisbane’s growing market of sober and sober-curious people.

Mr Choo said he was excited to embark on his own adventure after working for other people in the hospitality industry, both locally and internationally in London and Hong Kong, for more than 25 years.

“Me and my brother always wanted to do something together,” he said.

“It’s in a great spot, with a great community.

“The idea is to open other different concepts that I have in mind and hopefully I can make a name in Brisbane.”

Mitch and Antler will operate seven days a week, between 6.30am and 2.30pm, and cater to up to 60 people at a time. Bookings are not available at this time.
