Brisbane’s northside welcomes new cafe and creative hub

‘This is not just a coffee shop’: Self-professed bohemian opens new bayside cafe and events space to bring together the artistic community.

Coronavirus jobs growth: Where you should be looking for work

A wave of creative energy has washed into Sandgate, where self-professed ‘bohemian’ Sandra Ivanovic has opened the doors to her dream cafe, a space where artists, actors and poets can come together to sip herbal tea and celebrate art.

Cafe Bohemia, situated on Brighton Rd, could be mistaken for the cosy living room of a close friend, laden with colourful tapestries, books and local paintings.

“This is not just a coffee shop,” she said.

“I want to host performances from local artists, acts from the theatre, live music, book nights and art exhibitions.

“Up until now there’s been nothing like that in this area, everyone I’ve spoken to in Sandgate is quite excited about it!”

It is the second time Ms Ivanovic has attempted to open such a business, the first being in Margate which was forced to close during the height of the coronavirus.

While the past few months have been challenging, Ms Ivanovic said it all worked out for the best.

“The last place was a little cold and commercial, and we were limited with what we could do,” she said.

“This time we were able to find the perfect place for what I wanted, somewhere I can express myself completely and have other creative people come and help me create something beautiful.”

Cafe Bohemia offers a limited menu of cakes, pastries and slices, with particular highlights including the orange and almond cake and the raspberry cake.

Ms Ivanovic paid particular attention to her selection of coffee and tea, offering far more than the usual herbal fare.

“We have a wide selection including rosebud, and rosehip teas, we try to offer something quite different and a bit more relaxing,” she said.

“The coffee is from local roasters on the Sunshine Coast, and has a very rich flavour which I love.”
