VIOLETA De Marco never expected to go viral when she posted her first video on video-sharing social network TikTok in December.
“I just posted one video and it got over three million hits. I was doing a pretzel stretch. It’s kind of a contortion move, and when I do it, it looks quite bizarre,” she said.
“I posted it one night and then the next morning, it’d had one million hits.”

So the former gymnast continued to post videos of herself doing handstands in a variety of locations, and now has 72,000 TikTok fans.
“Anyone who knows me knows I take it to the next level. I don’t know what it is, but I’ve got no fear,” she said.
“I’ve done handstands off the weirdest things. In Sydney, I did it off a building that was 40m high on the edge. I was shaking. But when you’re doing a handstand, it’s psychological.”
The 25-year-old performer has been doing handstands since she was six, and has done them on the top of buildings, sports cars and even a football, and has never injured herself.
“Okay, I need to touch wood right now, but I’ve never hurt myself,” she said.
It’s a little different to what she was doing last September, when she was working nine to five selling tiles.
“I just decided I wanted to inspire people and make people happy by doing what I like to do,” she said.
“I really want to teach people how to do handstands around the world.”
As a social media influencer, Ms De Marco has now partnered with 13 companies including Lorna Jane, has appeared in music videos, and was also coaching people on how to do handstands before COVID-19 hit.
“I did three classes and then the pandemic happened,” she said.
“Half of my students were circus people who did all these other specialties, and some were complete randoms.”
Despite her skill, Ms De Marco said anyone could do a handstand with patience, persistence and timing - and enjoy the benefits it can bring.
“You know how everyone has a stress reliever? When I was really young and I got stressed, I’d turn to handstands,” she said.
“When I do a handstand, I feel so much joy.”
