Brisbane City Council’s conversion of the 18-hole golf course into an expansive new 64-hectare park began just 10 weeks ago but already there are noticeable changes.

The council’s final vision for the 45ha, $83 million project will see the former golf course transformed into a scenic inner city parkland inspired by international icons such as Central Park in New York City and Hyde Park in London.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said there has been incredible progress with the new park “more attractive, more accessible and ready to host events”.

“Victoria Park was opened to the public the day after the golf course closed,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Since then we have been working to create more to see and do in the 64-hectare park as we finalise our draft master plan.”

So far, 33 golf bunkers have been filled in, with almost a kilometre of fencing removed within the park.

Temporary toilets have been installed and pathways have been improved.

“Five of the old gold bunkers are being transformed into floral masterpieces, with 17 different variety of flowers to be planted, including a stunning and very photo-worthy grove of sunflowers,” Mr Schrinner said.

“With rolling green hills, stunning flower displays and lots of open space to kick a ball or for the kids to run around, Victoria Park has fast become one of the must-visit parks in Brisbane.”

Cr Schrinner also announced the first to events to be held at the new Victoria Park with a pop-up cinema coming to the city.

“I encourage everyone to save the date for the first main event at Victoria Park, with a pop-up cinema from 5pm on Saturday October 2, which will be the first of many public events here,” he said.

“Brisbane residents are already loving all that Victoria Park has to offer and as we finalise our masterplan and head towards the Brisbane 2032 Games this space is just going to get better.

“When millions of visitors from across the globe descend on Brisbane for the Games this parkland will be a must-visit tourist attraction but will also host temporary venues for the equestrian cross country and freestyle BMX events.

“The draft master plan will factor in our newly awarded role of host city of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will be released for community consultation in the second half of 2022.”

The floral displays will be planted this week and in full bloom by the end of October.
