Bird strike knocks out power and traffic lights on Gympie Rd at Lawnton on Brisbane’s north

Hundreds of homes were without power north of Brisbane after a bird strike knocked out electricity forcing Energex crews to the area near Gympie Rd at Lawnton

A bird strike has whacked out power in parts of Lawnton in Brisbane’s north affecting traffic lights and leaving residents of more than 850 homes waking up without electricity.

Traffic lights near train stations at Lawnton and Bray Park on Gympie Rd at Lawnton and near Strathpine are affected.

There is also no power near the Lawnton Swimming Pool.

An Energex spokesman said a switch component broke when a bird slammed into it, wiping out power initially to 860 homes.

He said power was expected to be restored to more than 700 of those addresses early but 80 homes would remain in the dark until after 9am.

Roads affected include Bells Pocket Rd, Binnowie Ct, Binnowie St, Buckby St, Francis Rd, Gardiner St, Gympie Rd, Jacque Ct, Jilba St, Kumbari St, Larue Ct, Leanne Cres, Leone St, Lucy St, Mitchell St, Muller Lane, Muller Rd, Myles St, Paisley Dr, Park Lane, Spitfire Ave, Tarandi St, Walter Cres, West Dianne St, Yenara St.
