‘Apprentice of the Year’ caught driving her car over the limit two days in a row

After receiving a 24-hour ban for drink-driving, this award-winning apprentice was driven to do it again after returning to her vehicle.

A one-time apprentice of the year and CFMEU scholarship holder has been fined and ordered off the road after being caught drink-driving while on her provisional licence two days in a row.

Killara Caroline Taylor, 21, pleaded guilty at Sandgate Magistrates Court to drink-driving on a provisional licence and driving while on a 24-hour suspension.

The court heard on Friday, June 5, Taylor was stopped by police on Gympie Rd in Aspley.

She told police she had not been drinking or taking drugs, but when breath-tested registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.082 per cent.

Her licence was immediately suspended for 24 hours.

The next day police pulled over the car again, noting Taylor’s licence had been suspended.

Police pulled the vehicle over and found Taylor driving the car again. The court heard Taylor was slurring her words and smelled of liquor.

She was breath-tested and registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.051 per cent.

The court heard after the first drink-driving incident, Taylor left her car on the side of Gympie Rd and returned the next day to get her wallet and other belongings.

But the car had been broken into and her wallet stolen. She then made the decision to drive the vehicle home.

The court heard Taylor was an apprentice plasterer but was currently not working due to an injury. She had previously been named apprentice of the year by a Sunshine Coast Rotary Club and had received a scholarship from the CFMEU.

Taylor was fined $700. Her licence was disqualified for three months for the first drink-driving charge, four months for the second drink-driving charge and six months for driving while her licence was disqualified.
